My inner critic used to be really loud and, like all inner critics, it was an absolute asshole.

Its chatter was so mean when I was in elementary school that i remember walking down the hall matching the words “I hate myself” with the sound of my foot falls on the linoleum floor.

In a college swim meet, I slowed down at the last minute to avoid winning a race because my inner critic had convinced me that I wasn’t good enough, fast enough, strong enough, smart enough or pretty enough.

Your inner critic is the voice that tells you that you’re not good enough, smart enough, skinny enough, pretty enough, strong enough, feminine enough, masculine enough, funny enough, etc, etc. We develop this voice in childhood. It keeps us small and “safe” and holds us back from being the super sparkly beings we’re meant to be.

I basically lived with a terrorist in my head (we all do). It kept me quiet and small and “normal” for 30 years. 

Then I transformed my inner critic in 2013, and everything changed. 

It’s been over a decade since I’ve heard from my inner critic. I love myself now and sometimes I win races. I’ll even happily tell you that I’m a really great coach, menu planner and dog mom.
