I know you know this
But maybe, like me, you need to be reminded as often as possible
Hi friends!
As every swimmer knows, the hardest part of any swim workout is getting in the pool.
Yesterday, as I stood on the edge of the pool, psyching myself up to dive into the colder-than-usual water, the lifeguard said, “this is the hardest part.”
And I laughed.
Because it is. That moment when my body enters the cold water-ugh…when I’m kicking underwater—ugggh…those first few strokes—argh. That first length is horrible, miserable, and very uncomfortable. And then, then it might continue to be uncomfortable for a few hundred yards (maybe even the whole workout as it was yesterday), but it’s tolerable. It’s fine. I am okay.
But standing on the pool deck getting ready to get in, that part doesn’t have to be miserable. I don’t have to brace myself for the cold. I don’t have to dread getting in.
Yes, the first maybe-20 seconds of my swim will likely be uncomfortable, but there is no reason to stretch that misery out for minutes by bracing or dreading or worrying or pre-grieving.
So, my friends, I’m here to remind you to be f-ing present. Parts of life can get pretty uncomfortable, but it doesn’t help anyone to prepare for that discomfort by making yourself uncomfortable in advance. Instead, look around you, look within you and recognize that in this very moment, everything is okay and maybe even wonderful. And live there—in the awesomeness that is right where your feet are.
I love you. You’re great.
Love,
Kelsey

This is a great reminder, thank you Kelsey. It’s so easy to project what we think is going to happen on where we are right now when we have no way of knowing what the future holds. This also reminds me to get into the cold water, even if I’m not a swimmer!
